Welcome

The Isle of Scalpay

The Isle of Scalpay is only 2.5 miles, or 4k in length, its nearest neighbour is the Isle of Harris only 330 yards away, that's 300m. Up till 1997 the only way to get to Scalpay was by ferry, now it has a bridge which makes this stunning little island accessible to the main Hebridean Islands of both Harris and Lewis as well as a host of smaller other bridged isles such as Great Bernera.

The old addage small is beautiful certainly applies to Scalpay with lots of places to explore. Puffin

  • You can walk out to the light house, built in 1825 by Robert Louis Stevenson (grandfather of the renowned author) –
  • Take a walk to visit the resident seals
  • Wander Scalpay harbour where throughout Summer yachts moor in its shelter
  • There are freshwater lochs and many little bays and inlets, see the old concrete boat, now used as storage by local fishermen
  • You can still see the old abandoned lobster 'holding tanks',  lobsters from the Hebrides are world renowned
  • A Community shop is opening in spring 2012 which will include a cafe and craft shop
  • There is also Fishing, both fresh water and sea fishing, on the doorstep

But this is only Scalpay, with The Isle of Harris and Lewis on your doorstep the scope for a real Hebridean Adventure beckons.  Cartwheel Bothy Self Catering Cottage is ideal, within driving distance of all the main Hebridean attractions and you can still be home for tea!
